TITEL EXHAUST SILENCER TITEL
deel grote vak Replacing the rear pipe of the exhaust. It looks that easy, but what a disillusion! The Parts Manual told me that partno. 599378 was the right exhaust pipe and I ordered it at Paddock Spares. A couple of days later it was allready there, thanks to Paddock! I compared the old and the new exhaust and they seemed identical, so everything seems perfect and it couldn't be a tough job to do. At the very most some rusted bolts to grind off. But it turned out something different...

On the photo you can see that a large piece of the exhaust was broken apart. I felt lucky that also the silencer as the broken piece were hanging on a mounting bracket. Otherwise the exhaust was felt off while driving I guess. As it was broken just behind the silencer, and you can't see it right away, it didn't attract my attention earlier (I'm not under the car every day). When I received the exhaust I compared the old and the new one and they seemed identical, so I thought it should be allright.

When I was halfway fitting the exhaust pipe (fitted to the middle section and hanging loose in the rear mounting) come true that the was no option to get the mounting bracket fitted allready. It seems that the mountaing bracket was welded onto the silencer on the wrong place. But I was sure that I ordered the right one!. I posted a topic on a Dutch forum about this and it come true that a couple of more Land Rover owners had got the same problem in the past. I removed the exhaust pipe and compared the old and new one very exacly. On the photo you can see that the bracket is welded onto the silencer in a difficult angle. Not very much, but enough to be a problem when fitting.

I took the exaust pipe to my brother-in-law who ground off the bracket and welded it onto the right place and angle. Now fitting had to be no more problem. When measuring it attracted my attention that the flange was on a different place on the silencer. This became the next problem, but at that time I wasn't be aware of that.

The flange on the new exhaust is almost in the middle of the silencer, on the old one the flange is more to the side. This became the next problem when fitting. As the different place of the flange, the exhaust pipe was more to the middle of the Land Rover. Not very much, but enough for touching the shackle of the suspension. I've tackled this problem by a couple of washers and bolts. It's not a very good looking solution, but it will do the job. At another time, when there is welding job I will weld a proper mounting bracket.
